The Center for Transforming Lives has empowered women, children and families in need in Tarrant County since its very inception more than a century ago. Today, the agency breaks the cycle of poverty for women and children through safe housing, early childhood development, and financial stability.
The organization started in 1907 as the first YWCA™ in the state of Texas. It began as a boarding house, cafeteria and employment bureau for women coming to the growing city of Fort Worth in search of jobs. Women were taught non-traditional job skills, such as operating the typewriter, which enabled them to enter the workforce. In the 1930s, the organization expanded to include affordable, accessible child care for women with small children who needed the help to work and support their families. Over the years, services for troubled youth and seniors were provided, along with job training for women of all ages.
The organization’s primary focus has always been providing safe housing and early childhood education for economically disadvantaged women and children, and these programs continue today. In 2013, financial empowerment services were added to give women and families the tools they need to become financially self-sufficient.
In 2015, the organization officially changed its name to Center for Transforming Lives to better reflect its local mission of breaking the cycle of poverty for women and their families.
Today, under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Carol Klocek, the Center for Transforming Lives has an annual operating budget of more than $6 million and offers enhanced services for more than 3,700 low-income and homeless women, children and families annually, helping hundreds to break the cycle of poverty.
Housing services include emergency shelter for homeless women, rapid re-housing for homeless families, to move them out of shelters and dangerous situations as quickly as possible, and financial literacy education and one-on-one financial coaching help women and families to save the money they earn. The Center for Transforming Lives continues to operate three child development centers specializing in literacy-rich education for homeless and low-income children in Fort Worth and Arlington, and in 2015 the organization earned an Early Head Start Partnership Grant to enhance these services.
